There is some significant evidence to suggest that high-phenolic olive oil may have benefits for muscles and joints. Phenolic compounds are natural antioxidants found in many plant-based foods, including high-phenolic olive oil. These compounds have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and may help to reduce oxidative stress, which can contribute to muscle and joint damage.

olive oil for muscles and joints

One study published in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging found that consumption of high-phenolic olive oil was associated with improved muscle function in older adults. The study authors suggested that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of the phenolic compounds in the olive oil may have contributed to this effect.

In addition, a study published in the journal Nutrients found that consumption of high-phenolic olive oil was associated with a reduction in joint pain and stiffness in individuals with rheumatoid arthritis. The study authors suggested that the anti-inflammatory effects of the phenolic compounds in the olive oil may have contributed to this effect.

    Oleocanthal for Inflammation

Research has shown that oleocanthal has anti-inflammatory properties similar to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen. Specifically, oleocanthal has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes called cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2) which play a role in the production of inflammatory molecules in the body.

One study published in the journal Nature showed that oleocanthal was effective in reducing inflammation and pain in a mouse model of rheumatoid arthritis. Another study published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry found that oleocanthal reduced the expression of inflammatory genes in human cells.
