High-phenolic olive oil is great for inflammation

High-phenolic or medical-grade olive oil is a type of olive oil that is excellent for reducing inflammation. It is the least processed and most nutrient-dense type of olive oil and contains high levels of healthy monounsaturated fats and antioxidants, including oleocanthal, a phenolic compound responsible for reducing inflammation – with natural ibuprofen-like benefits.

Oleocanthal and inflammation in medical-grade olive oil

Studies have shown that the polyphenols and especially oleocanthal in this type of oil can help fight inflammation naturally throughout the body by inhibiting the production of inflammatory molecules and enzymes. This can be particularly beneficial for people with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and other inflammatory disorders.

Oleocanthal is a natural polyphenol found that is not found in the required amounts in conventional extra virgin olive oil, but solely in medical great olive oil. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties similar to those of ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

How does oleocanthal work in the body?

When oleocanthal is ingested, it inhibits the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are involved in the inflammatory process. Specifically, it inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, which are involved in the production of prostaglandins, which are inflammatory molecules.

By inhibiting these enzymes, oleocanthal helps to reduce inflammation in the body. In fact, it has been suggested that the anti-inflammatory properties of oleocanthal may be responsible for many of the health benefits associated with medical-grade olive oil consumption, including a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer.
